How To Make Jemblem, Indonesian Grated Cassava Balls with Palm Sugar Filling

Jemblem is a traditional Javanese food made from cassava. The shape is round, sometimes slightly oval, like a chicken egg with palm sugar or coconut sugar filling. The savory taste of cassava and palm sugar filling which is sweet and melts when you bite it, makes Jemblem very tasty and loved by all people.

Jemblem is often sold in traditional markets or Javanese food stalls. Made with grated cassava and shaped round then filled with palm sugar or coconut sugar then deep fried.

The best time to enjoy Jemblem or also known as Klenyem is when the weather is rainy or cold with a cup of tea with family.

Here are the ingredients and how to make Jemblem

Ingredients

1 kg grated cassava

200 gram Grated coconut

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract or vanilla powder

1 tablespoon sugar

Salt to taste

Enough oil to deep frying

For the Filling:

150 gram palm sugar or coconut sugar, thinly sliced

How to make Jemblem

Mix the cassava that has been soft with grated coconut, vanilla and sugar, stir until well blended.

Shape the dough according to taste, for example oval or round, then fill it with palm sugar or coconut  according to taste, then shaped the doug and make sure to make no hole so the filling won’t come out

Heat the oil, then fry the dough until golden brown.  Fry over medium heat so it doesn’t burn.

The Jemblem is ready to be served!
